How To Upgrade Your Shopify Account

Shopify provides plenty of different plan options for businesses of all sizes. So, what if your company growth surpasses the limits of your initial plan choice? Or, what if you’re currently on a trial plan, and want to upgrade to begin your official Shopify journey?

Today, we’ll discuss the simple steps to upgrade your Shopify account and point out some tips to ensure a smooth transition. Whether you want to make adjustments from a desktop, Apple, or Android device, upgrading your Shopify account is quick and easy. So, let’s begin!

Shopify Plans

To check your current Shopify plan, navigate to your store admin page, or open the Shopify mobile app, and select Settings. (On mobile, Settings is located on the Store tab.) Then, choose the option for Plan and Permissions.

Then, scroll down on the page, if necessary, to locate the Plan Details section. There you’ll find a short description of your current plan, as well as some benefits of upgrading. Here’s a quick comparison of each of the plans:

Basic Shopify: $29 per month

The Basic Shopify plan allows 2 staff accounts and up to 4 inventory locations. On this plan, Shopify charges a 2.9% + $0.30 online credit card rate, and a 2% fee on any payment provider except Shopify Payments.

Shopify Plan: $79 per month

The Shopify plan facilitates up to 5 staff accounts and 5 inventory locations. Credit card rates run at 2.6% + $0.30. Utilizing a payment gateway other than Shopify Payments costs you an extra 1%.

This plan includes all of the Basic plan’s benefits but carries some valuable additions, such as professional reporting, USPS Priority Mail Cubic pricing, country-specific domains, and international pricing.

Advanced Shopify: $299 per month

On the Advanced Shopify plan, users can set up 15 staff accounts and assign up to 8 inventory locations. Shopify charges a rate of 2.4% + $0.30 for online credit card purchases, as well as a 0.5% charge on any purchases completed on gateways other than Shopify Payments.

Like the Shopify plan, the Advanced plan builds on the benefits included in the lower-tier options. An advanced report builder, third-party calculated shipping rates, and international per-variant pricing are just some of the perks of upgrading to the Advanced Shopify plan.

Additional Plan Options

Shopify Lite ($9 per month) allows established website owners to add eCommerce features to their platform. It also provides in-person merchants with a means to accept credit card payments, like at flea markets, art shows, or fairs. However, users cannot build an eCommerce site with the Lite plan, so most entrepreneurs wanting to create a store from scratch should choose from the Basic, Shopify, or Advanced plans.

On the other end of the spectrum, Shopify Plus (cost varies per account) is an option for large businesses completing enterprise-levels of sales. Most business owners who utilize Shopify Plus do so to facilitate booming business - as in, over one million dollars in profits per year. Shopify Plus also allows users to utilize an API to branch out into headless commerce. Due to the heft of this plan, most small- to medium-sized entrepreneurs should choose between the Basic, Shopify, and Advanced plans.

How to Upgrade Your Shopify Account

Once you’ve decided you’d like to upgrade to the next plan option, navigate to your store admin page, or open the Shopify app on mobile. Then, follow these steps:

  1. Select Settings. (On mobile, you’ll first have to click on the Store tab, then you’ll see the Settings option.)
  2. Next, choose Plan and Permissions and scroll to the Plan Details section.
  3. Click on Upgrade Plan.
  4. To continue, click on Upgrade Plan once more.
  5. Select a billing cycle, and carefully read the charge agreement.
  6. Click Confirm Changes to accept and agree. (If you change your mind, or don’t want to proceed, choose Cancel.)

Alternatively, if you’re still not decided on which plan you’d like to choose, you can compare between them by following steps one and two, above. Then, choose Compare Plans. Once you’ve read through the information, tap Choose This Plan on your selected choice and then finish by following steps four through six in the above list.

Important Upgrade Notes To Keep in Mind:

  • When you upgrade your plan, Shopify issues a bill reflecting the new subscription fee. However, your prior subscription fee is prorated and applied towards the new monthly subscription fee (for the first month only).
  • Changing your billing period from monthly to annually resets your shipping carrier information. If this applies to you, be sure to re-enter the new carrier information.
  • If you change your billing cycle, Shopify will close the current plan’s bill and send it to you for payment. However, at the same time, Shopify will open your new billing cycle, and any unused time you’ve already paid for will be applied to it.
